There are 2 ways to work with me:
Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.
Prior to this work beginning I will meet with you, the parent/s carer/s to think through the child/adolescents difficulties.
Together we will arrange a time where I can meet the child. I use two rooms, one in Newport and one in Cardiff, the rooms will have toys in for the child to make use of, but they also receive a ‘box’ of their own which is just theirs.
I will offer a time and venue, this will be adhered to for the whole time of the assessment. Providing a consistent space and time is important to help build trust and feelings of safety for both you and your child.
Initially I offer an assessment phase. This is a 6 week block, 5 face to face sessions with the child and then a session where we come together to think about the sessions and whether psychotherapy can be of help.
If I believe it can then I will suggest a treatment period, with regular parent sessions. These sessions are not to betray the child’s confidentiality, as what they display in the room remains there, but rather to think about how the child is presenting at home and thoughts about how you can help them.
How long does therapy last?
The sessions run for 50 minutes.
The amount of sessions needed will however vary. Sometimes, a few sessions is enough to shift the emotional responses and behaviour and feelings will begin to change quickly. However, we are all different and therapy takes time.
I might be able to offer an insight into the child’s world, but they will need time to accept, understand and make sense of their feelings and so regular weekly sessions offer the best outcome.
How old does the child need to be?
I work with children from birth – 25! This means I offer parent/infant work as well as child/adolescent and individual parent coaching.
How much does a session cost?
A session costs £85 and is payable prior to the session taking place. You can pay for the block of 6 upfront or individually – it is up to you.
Will you write a report at the end of the assessment
Yes, I can do this, some parents like to have something written up and it also helps to make sense of the child’s internal world.

Parent Coaching
Parent coaching offers you space to think about your child in a way that is safe and supportive. I am not here to tell you what to do, nor that you are doing it wrong!
I offer a space to think about what you are seeing from your child, that might be feelings or behaviours that they do not seem to be managing well; but we will also think about how this makes you feel.
Parenting is a challenge!
Whether you are birth parents, adoptive parents, foster parents, grandparents – whatever ‘role’ you are in, having a space to think through parenting offers a perspective that might not have been considered in the past.
How much do the sessions cost?
Sessions cost £120and can take place online or in person – I offer evening and weekend sessions, so if you are working full time during the week that isn’t a problem.
I allocate an hour for the sessions, I find that any longer than that and you can feel drained, and the point of the sessions are to help you think through the challenges not to leave you feeling worn out! You have enough of that feeling!
I will also send you some notes following on from the session. These help you to reflect and think about what we have spoken about.
Do you need to see my child for me to have a parent coaching session?
No – we will talk through whatever it is you are finding tricky and think about what might be behind the behaviour and how you can help your child.

Other ways I can help you and your child...
What if I can’t afford £85 right now but really need your help?
Not a problem, I have set up a monthly membership group ‘The Parenting Support Pod’.
The group is partly a Facebook group where you can receive support from other parents, but you will also have access to an online portal.
The membership offers an online discovery session once a month, where I go online in the group, you can ask questions, and we will think it through.
You will also have access to mini trainings and free downloadable resources which you can use with your child. I also offer a book or audible review each month so that you can gain additional knowledge from resources that are readily available, without wasting your time or money on books or resources that aren’t that helpful to you.
This membership costs £25 per month, you can cancel at any time, so if you want to just come in for a month you can! There is no pressure to stay, you can use it as you need to.
What else does the Thinking Pod offer?
Part of our offering is bespoke training to Social Work teams, including fostering and adoption teams. We provide training that looks at understanding children and adolescent behaviour and what it is they are attempting to communicate with us. Through this we are then able to think about how we respond that is helpful and takes into account the child’s internal world to build healthy relationships.
Trainings are offered on a variety of topics such as:
Attachment
Understanding what the behaviour is attempting to communicate
How our own feelings can impact those of others
What to do when a child is struggling with their identity
How does a child fit in to a foster family
What are the impacts of adoption
How to help a child manage anxiety
How to help a child who refuses school.
The Thinking Pod also offers workshop sessions to parents wishing to help their child manage school based anxiety.
We have a variety of free downloads on our website as well as course to help think about your child’s behaviour and how to manage it. If you would like to chat to us about a bespoke workshop, book a call using the link below.
