Understanding Intrusive Thoughts: You’re Not Alone
You are not alone!
As parents, we all know the challenges that come with raising children. From juggling school runs to managing family life, it can sometimes feel like we’re carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders.
And if you’ve ever had an intrusive thought pop into your head, you might feel like you’re not alone in the chaos.

What Are Intrusive Thoughts?
So, what exactly is an intrusive thought?

It’s that nagging thought that you just can’t shake, often negative and seemingly out of nowhere.
Picture this: you’re driving down the road, and suddenly your mind starts racing with questions like, “What if I hit the central reservation right now?”
Before you know it, your brain is spiralling, imagining all the consequences. Sound familiar?
Why Do They Happen?
Most of us have encountered intrusive thoughts at some point.
They can be linked to stressful situations, trauma, or even conditions like PTSD, OCD, anxiety, or depression.
But even if you don’t have a specific diagnosis, intrusive thoughts can still make an appearance when life gets overwhelming.

Intrusive Thoughts as a Parent

As parents, these thoughts can manifest as worries about our children—fears of something happening to them that we can’t control or that nagging feeling that something just isn’t right.
Sometimes, these thoughts come to us as vivid images instead of just words. For example, I often visualise stories so clearly when reading that I sometimes can’t remember if I’ve read a book or watched its film adaptation!
Treating Intrusive Thoughts
Here’s the thing: intrusive thoughts can feel like unwanted guests in our minds.
We didn’t invite them in, yet here they are, sticking around longer than we’d like. It’s essential to recognise that these thoughts don’t reflect who we are or our realities; they’re just random intrusions, much like dreams that pop into our heads while we sleep.

Managing the Uninvited Guests
So how do we deal with these pesky thoughts? First, treat them like uninvited guests. Acknowledge their presence but don’t entertain them. Distract yourself and shift your focus.
Remember, just because they’re unsettling doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you. Often, they’re simply a sign that you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed, and your brain is asking for a little time out.
Taking Back Control
The key to managing intrusive thoughts is recognising them for what they are. Accept that they don’t hold any deep truths about you or your life; they’re just thoughts.
By observing these thoughts without judgement and understanding that they might be tied to past experiences but don’t represent your current reality, you can take away some of their power.

You’re Not Alone
Feeling overwhelmed by intrusive thoughts doesn’t mean you’re failing as a parent. It means you’re human!
If you ever find yourself struggling, remember it’s perfectly okay to reach out for support.
