Welcome to The Thinking Pod

If you’re looking for therapy for your child or parent coaching, you’re in the right place.

Hi, I'm Charlotte, and I’m a child and adolescent psychoanalytic psychotherapist.

It is my mission to help children, teenagers, and their families feel seen, heard, and understood - especially in the moments when life feels messy, overwhelming, or disconnected. I believe every child deserves to feel safe, valued, and supported as they navigate the challenges of growing up.

I believe in the power of curiosity, compassion, and connection - and in working with families to create lasting emotional change, not just quick fixes. If you're seeking a thoughtful, experienced therapist who will walk alongside your child (and you) with empathy and insight, you're in the right place.

What is child & adolescent psychoanalytic psychotherapy?

You’d have heard of counsellors, therapists, psychotherapists.

But the type of therapy I practice helps children and young people (up to the age of 25) with a range of psychological difficulties.

We focus on the child’s internal world, their relationships with others and their past experiences - we use all of this in seeking to understand the underlying causes of their problems.

How does it work?

I meet 1:1 with the child, initially for 6 sessions to assess if psychotherapy is the best option for the child.

On the 6th session I meet with the child and parents to plan ongoing psychotherapy sessions, or I will suggest another option and refer you on, if I’ve assessed that would be more appropriate for your child.

Think of an onion.

Our type of psychotherapy aims to get to the core of the onion to help the child and parents understand themselves better and feel more confident.

It’s often a long term intervention, using play and the relationship with the therapist to understand the internal conflicts the child is experiencing.

Working with the family/parents/carers is also part of the work, this will help the parents understand the child and facilitate working together to make changes.

What is parent coaching?

As a psychotherapist I offer parent coaching.

This is a process where we think together about your child and work to alter and improve your parenting skills and strategies to build a stronger relationship and ultimately improve the child’s behaviour.

How does it work?

We set goals together of what it is you’d like to achieve, they will be realistic and reflect your parenting approach, identifying areas for improvement.

We meet regularly, to think through what is happening and your responses/thoughts.

Who am I?

I am a trained psychotherapist, completing a 7 year doctoral programme. I am registered with the Association of Child Psychotherapists and the British Psychotherapy Foundation

Why did I train to become a psychotherapist?

I grew up on a council estate (social housing) to a teenage single mother, living on benefits . I experienced significant loss, which triggered overwhelming anxiety and then severe panic attacks. This meant years of missed education.

I went on to have careers within social care, teaching and project management. My background fuelled a desire to offer psychotherapy in Wales, and helped me develop a way of imparting information that is understandable and is useable.

I am straight-talking, determined and authentic with an ability to unearth the unspoken and break down the defences that inhibit our ability to talk to and understand our children.

I live in South Wales, and was the first Doctoral trainee of child and adolescent psychotherapy within South Wales. With 25 years working with families, I am passionate about parents and carers being seen as the professionals to help their children and young people receive the support they need to live a fulfilled life.
