You are dreading the back-to-school morning...
You’re dreading the back to school morning because you know that it is going to be a disaster. This anxiety feels different, more intense, and you’re unsure how to handle it. Mornings are chaotic, and even if they get to school, you often get a call to pick them up soon after. You feel helpless and desperate for a solution. I completely understand this.
Hey, I’m Charlotte, a parenting coach and psychodynamic therapist with 20 years of experience helping parents manage their kids' anxiety. I help you get to the root cause and understand where it’s coming from, and most importantly, how to manage it.
With the right knowledge and tools, your child can become more resilient and confident. I know firsthand how hard it is to live with school refusal anxiety because I experienced it myself at 11 years old.
At the time, my situation was handled poorly, leading to more fear. What I needed were specific, intentional conversations and tools to manage my anxiety and build my character.
That’s why I created this resource.
I would love to hear your feedback and how your journey with this resources has been.
The School based anxiety toolkit includes
Over the next week, you’ll receive daily emails from me with bite-sized training and resources that you can use immediately to gain more understanding, communicate with your child, and equip them with tools to manage, adapt, and build resilience.
Getting a handle on this will help not only your child but also everyone else in your household. It’s tough when a child refuses to go to school, creating a lot of stress. That’s why I created this resource – real tools that work, delivered in a short, succinct, and easy-to-implement format.
Meet Maggie
Maggie, a 12 year old girl had just moved house, as a result this meant getting on a bus with a lot more children on, in a place she didn’t know. The thoughts that people would look at her, that she wouldn’t know where to get off the bus became overwhelming and her school attendance reduced. Despite having caught the bus, mum was (more often than not, to get her there) taking her to school and picking her up.
Mum and Maggie worked together, initially catching a bus with the same route so that Maggie had an idea in her mind of the route the bus took and where to get off. Then the work to manage the anxiety began with identifying the reality that people do look at you when you get on a bus!
With Maggie thinking about her looking at people when she got on the bus and what she had thought about them. A plan was put in place to use techniques that allowed Maggie a sense of control and safety. She was then able to get on the bus and school attendance increased. Maggie went on to complete her A Levels before beginning University in the Autumn.
Meet Dean
Dean, a 16 year old, was struggling to be away from his mum. School attendance was virtually zero, and when he did get to school he would ring mum continuously. Working with mum and Dean to put a plan in place, we identified his worries about being away from mum and his triggers. We then wrote out a plan that looked at managing his own feelings and mum not responding to every call and text. Mum would respond to two!
Dean needed to use those two wisely. Overtime school attendance increased and he and mum worked together to use techniques that helped control the anxiety levels.
Dean left school, attended drama college and became employed. He still uses the techniques when he becomes overwhelmed, but he knows that he can and does control the anxiety. Anxiety does not control him.
