The World Within:

Making Sense of Your Anxious Child

You've tried everything you can think of to help your anxious child. But do you really understand what's happening for them?

You've tried everything you can think of to help your anxious child. But do you really understand what's happening for them?

You've reassured them.

You've encouraged them.

You've tried being patient, being firm, giving them space and staying close.

You've read the advice. You've tried the strategies.

And yet, here you are.

Still trying to work out why your child is so anxious.

What if the next step isn't another strategy, but a different way of understanding your child?

Welcome to The World Within.

Six short sessions with me, Charlotte Cook, Child & Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist, helping you explore what's happening beneath your child's anxiety.

No complicated psychology.

No parenting rules to memorise.

No compulsory workbooks or homework.

Just you and me, thinking together about your child's internal world.

You know your child better than anyone. So why does their anxiety sometimes make so little sense?

Here's what most approaches miss.

Perhaps they desperately want to go somewhere, but when the time comes, they can't.

Perhaps they need you constantly, but then push you away.

Perhaps they become angry over something that seems so small, and you find yourself getting angry too.

Perhaps they ask the same question over and over, even though you've answered it a hundred times.

You find yourself thinking:

What am I missing?

Why can't I get through to them?

Am I making this worse?

And sometimes, if you're really honest, you're just exhausted by it all.

I want to introduce you to a different way of thinking.

Because what your child does on the outside doesn't always tell us what's happening on the inside.

And when we become curious about that internal world, we open up different possibilities for understanding and responding.

Your child has a whole world happening inside them.

A world of feelings, fears, wishes, expectations and experiences.

Some they can explain.

Some they can't yet put into words.

Some they might not fully understand themselves.

Anxiety can be connected to things we can see, such as school pressures, sensory overwhelm or difficult experiences.

But there may also be feelings and relationship patterns that are harder to recognise.

A fear of separation.

A worry about disappointing someone.

The difficulty of loving someone and being furious with them at the same time.

The wish to be independent, alongside the fear of being apart.

These are the things I want to help you think about.

Not so you can analyse your child.

But so you can begin to see more than the behaviour in front of you

Because a different understanding can lead to a different response.

And sometimes, that's where change begins.

Imagine being able to think differently about those difficult moments.

Your child refuses to go to school.

Instead of immediately getting caught up in how to get them through the door, you begin wondering what part of the experience feels so difficult.

Your teenager shouts, "I hate you!"

Instead of hearing only rejection, you can begin thinking about the enormous feelings that might be happening beneath those words, whilst still holding appropriate boundaries.

Your child needs constant reassurance.

Rather than assuming they're simply not listening, you become curious about what reassurance is helping them manage.

And when their anxiety starts to overwhelm you, you begin to recognise what's happening inside yourself too.

You won't always get it right.

You won't always know the answer.

But you'll have a different way of thinking when things get difficult.

That's what I want The World Within to give you.

THE WORLD WITHIN

Imagine beginning to understand...

  • Why your child's anxiety keeps appearing, even when everything seems fine.

You'll explore what anxiety might be protecting your child from, and why the things that feel frightening to them aren't always obvious.

  • Why your child can desperately need you and push you away at the same time.

You'll begin making sense of conflicting feelings, and why anger, frustration and a need for closeness can exist together.

  • Why your child's anxiety can leave YOU feeling so overwhelmed.

You'll begin recognising what happens inside you when your child struggles, and how your own emotional responses can become part of the interaction.

  • Why reassurance, comfort and closeness can mean so much to your child.

You'll explore how children develop emotional security, and why separation, independence and growing up can sometimes feel so difficult.

  • Why the same anxious behaviour doesn't always need the same response.

You'll learn to look beyond what your child is doing and consider what might be happening beneath it, alongside their actual experiences, needs and environment.

  • How to respond with more understanding, rather than constantly wondering what to do next.

You'll begin bringing everything together, recognising patterns, considering different possibilities and finding a more thoughtful way forward.

This isn't about having all the answers.

It's about learning to ask different questions.

And beginning to see your child, and their anxiety, through a different lens.

Six short sessions. A different way of thinking.

The World Within introduces you to psychoanalytic thinking in a way that's easy to understand and relate to everyday family life.

We'll explore anxiety, relationships, overwhelming feelings, separation, emotional development and the complicated feelings that exist between parents and children.

I'll explain the ideas using familiar examples, helping you consider how they might relate to your own child.

You don't need any previous knowledge of psychology.

And you certainly don't need to remember the names of the people who developed the theories!

Here's how it works.

You don't need to watch both recording formats. You don't need to complete the workbook.

And there's nothing to hand in.

You can simply listen and think.

Because sometimes the most useful thing we can do is stop searching for another answer and give ourselves the space to understand the question.

Meet Charlotte Cook

I'm a qualified Child & Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist, founder of The Thinking Pod, a parent and someone who knows what anxiety feels like from the inside.

I've spent years working with children, teenagers and their families, including within NHS CAMHS.

And something I've become increasingly passionate about is helping parents understand what's happening beneath their child's behaviour.

Because parents are given so much advice about what to do.

But far less opportunity to think about why.

My approach draws on psychoanalytic thinking, which helps us explore feelings, relationships and the parts of our emotional lives that aren't always obvious.

I've taken some of these ideas and made them accessible in The World Within.

Not because I expect you to become a psychotherapist.

But because I believe parents deserve the opportunity to understand their children more deeply.

And I'd love to help you begin.

Is The World Within for you?

This programme is for parents who:

  • Have a child or teenager experiencing anxiety.

  • Feel stuck in repeated patterns of reassurance, avoidance or difficult interactions.

  • Want to understand their child's behaviour rather than simply manage it.

  • Are curious about how their own feelings and responses might affect what happens between them.

  • Want to think more deeply about their child without being given another list of things to do.

It's also suitable for parents of children with diagnosed or suspected autism or ADHD who would like to explore another way of understanding emotional experiences.

We'll keep sensory needs, communication differences and the child's actual environment in mind.

This is an educational programme, not an individual assessment or replacement for therapy or other professional support.

What you're getting

This programme is for parents who:

  • Six prerecorded sessions with Charlotte Cook, Child & Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist.

  • Two ways to learn: talking-to-camera recordings or narrated slides.

  • Reflective questions at the end of every session.

  • An optional reflection workbook.

  • Approximately two hours of teaching, designed to be explored at your own pace.

£97

One payment. No ongoing subscription.

For less than the cost of a single private consultation with me, you can begin exploring the ideas that inform how I think about children's emotional worlds.

This isn't personal therapy or an individual formulation of your child.

It's an opportunity to develop a different way of understanding what might be happening, and how that understanding could change the way you respond.

A few questions you might have

Will this help if my child is autistic or has ADHD?

The programme explores feelings and relationships, which are relevant for neurodivergent children too. Charlotte also talks about the ND brain and what it means for our anxious kids. It doesn't replace understanding sensory, communication or environmental needs, and isn't a diagnosis-specific intervention.

Is this another anxiety-management course?

No. Rather than teaching a set of techniques, I'll introduce you to psychoanalytic thinking and help you consider what might be happening beneath your child's anxiety and behaviour.

Do I need to know anything about psychology?

Not at all. I'll explain everything in everyday language, using examples you can relate to.

Will I need to complete a workbook?

No. There is an optional workbook, but all the reflective questions are included in the recordings. You can simply listen and think.

Will I get to speak to Charlotte about my child?

The World Within is a prerecorded educational programme. Individual consultations, live sessions and personal assessments aren't included.

Will this tell me exactly why my child is anxious?

No. Anxiety can have many causes, and we can't know everything happening inside another person's mind. What the programme offers is a way of exploring different possibilities, understanding patterns and considering how you might respond.

You've spent so long trying to work out what to do about your child's anxiety.

Perhaps it's time to understand it differently.

To look beyond the behaviour.

To become curious about the feelings beneath it.

To recognise what happens inside you when your child struggles.

And to begin making sense of the emotional world you're both navigating.

You don't need to know everything.

You don't need to get everything right.

But you can begin thinking differently.

I'd love you to join me.
